A semi truck lost an entire rear tandem axle assembly in Illinois on Tuesday, sending eight wheels bouncing down Interstate 55.
The incident happened at 10:24 a.m. on April 5th in Lemont, Illinois.
According to Lemont Patch, the tractor trailer was traveling along in the right lane of the I-55 expressway at Lemont Road when it suddenly lost its rear tandem axle assembly suspension unit. The axle somehow disconnected from the truck’s chassis and went bouncing off into another lane of Interstate 55, where it struck an oncoming school bus that was thankfully empty of students.
Both the bus driver and the trucker were able to pull over safely onto the side of the road. Neither were injured and both refused treatment. The incident slowed traffic as police worked to remove the wheels from the roadway.
“Kind of hard to make an 18-wheeler move with only 10 wheels attached,” tweeted a local radio station.
