Teen facing charges for fatal wreck with semi truck

A teen driver is facing multiple charges after driving his pickup full of friends into the path of a semi truck in Texas last month.

The accident happened on May 13th just before 10 p.m. in Hutto, Texas. The driver, 18-year-old Tristan Carrillo, was bonded out of jail on Tuesday, June 14th.

According to KXAN News, dash cam footage from the semi truck involved in the incident shows the pickup, driven by Carrillo, “slowing almost to a complete stop then proceeding into the intersection in front of the 18-wheeler,” on Chandler Road. The semi truck was traveling at around 65 mph at the time.

All three people riding in the back of the pickup died and Carrillo was injured. Upon investigation, police found a case of beer on the rear floorboard of the pickup. One of the passengers riding inside of the cab told officers that everyone in the pickup had been drinking, but that Carrillo  “was possibly drinking the least so he was chosen to drive everyone home.”

Carrillo’s blood alcohol content was found to be .083 at the time of the crash – the legal limit is .08. As he was being transported to the hospital, Carrillo told officers that he “had no clue” who was driving at the time of the wreck.

Carrillo is currently facing three counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and one count of intoxication assault with a vehicle.
