Texas truck stop evacuated for hazmat leak

Published:

Police are evacuating a Pilot truck stop in Schulenburg, Texas, on Monday afternoon due to a major hazardous materials spill.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), “There is an 18-wheeler at the Pilot in Schulenburg that is currently leaking a corrosive substance.”

FCSO said that the substance spilled is sulphur dioxide.

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau reports that one person is injured.

As of 2:50 p.m., FCSO says that a hazmat team is on scene.

“…It is now being requested that 1 mile radius north of I-10 be evacuated until further notice,” FCSO said in an update.

Police previously said that they were working to evacuate all homes within a half-mile radius, with those at more than a half mile but less than two miles being asked to shelter in place.
