Truck driver fatally shot by another truck driver on Tennessee interstate following crash, police say

Published:

A truck driver lost his life following a roadside shooting in Kingsport, Tennessee, on Friday, May 20, according to local police.

The Kingsport Police Department (KPD) responded around 4:45 p.m. on May 20 to northbound I-81 at exit 63 (Airport Parkway) in Kingsport for a reported shooting.

An initial KPD investigation revealed that Maryland based Alex Erik Miller, 42, and a 34 year old unnamed individual were both driving tractor trailers northbound on I-81 approaching exit 63 when “for reasons still under investigation, the two moving tractor trailers came into contact with one another.”

Police say that the two truck drivers pulled off of the interstate.

“At some point that followed, and also for reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated resulting in Mr. Miller being fatally shot by the other individual. The identity of the other individual is known and he is cooperating with the investigation,” KPD said in a news release.

KPD is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision between the two tractor trailers, or any of the events that followed on the roadside, to please contact them as soon as possible in the KPD Criminal Investigations Division at 423-229-9429 or call Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.

The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing. KPD says that they will consult with the Office of the Second Judicial District (Sullivan County) Attorney General to determine what, if any, criminal charges may be applicable to this incident.
