Truck driver told police his brakes failed prior to crash that killed four in Arizona

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) is investigating a fatal fiery crash that occurred near Sedona on Sunday.

The crash occurred at 2:18 p.m on September 18.

A truck driver hauling a load of glass southbound on I-17 reported that he lost control of his brakes due to a mechanical issue.

The truck driver then took the exit for Sedona at mile marker 298. He was unable to stop at the stop sign and struck a passenger vehicle traveling northbound on SR 179.

The crash sent both vehicles off the highway and down an embankment, where the semi truck came to a stop on top of the car.

Both vehicles caught fire.

The truck driver was able to escape from his truck and wasn’t hurt.

The four people inside the car passed away at the scene.

AZDPS says that they are still working to determine the identities of the deceased due to the intensity of the fire.

The incident remains under investigation. Police say that impairment was not a factor in the crash.
