A truck driver was arrested on Sunday evening after allegedly breaking into a vape shop and stealing several items.
The incident happened on April 24th in Gillette, Wyoming at around 9:30 p.m.
According to County 17 News, police responded to a commercial alarm at Mystix Vapes to find the front door to the business broken open. As police were investigating, 47-year-old trucker Jerry Peterson came up to police and allegedly admitted to breaking the door, claiming it had been an accident.
Peterson went on to explain that he had been checking the tires on his rig in the parking lot using a hammer when it bounced out of his hand and broke out the door to the business. Peterson said that he had not entered the store.
Officers were unable to locate a hammer inside of the store, but were able to obtain a search warrant for Peterson’s cab, where they found the hammer. The store owner then arrived on the scene and confirmed that several items were missing. These items were later found inside of a nearby trash can.
Peterson was then arrested for felony burglary and was charged with destroying property. The combined value of the stolen items was estimated to be around $5,000.
