The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning drivers to plan ahead for a lengthy rest area closure beginning in a couple of weeks.
Officials say that starting in late May, the Troutville Rest Area located on southbound I-81 near mile marker 158 in Botetourt County, Virginia, will close for construction.
The rest area will remain closed until early September 2022.
During the rest area closure, a concrete barrier will be installed at the rest area to prevent drivers from entering the building or using the parking lot or restrooms.
During the rest area closure, crews will extend the ramps leading to and from the facility. Crews will also be expanding the truck parking area by 10 to 13 spaces.
VDOT encourages southbound I-81 drivers to use the Fairfield Rest Area at mile marker 195 in Rockbridge County or the Radford Rest Area at mile marker 108 in Montgomery County.
While the Troutville Rest Area is closed, officials will temporarily allow commercial vehicle drivers to park and use portable toilets at the Troutville Weigh Station located on southbound I-81 at mile marker 149.
See the VDOT video below for additional information on the Troutville Rest Area closure.
