Virginia rest area shuttered since May reopens with more truck parking

Published:

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that a popular rest area located in Botetourt County has reopened after months of closure for upgrades.

On December 16, VDOT announced the reopening of the Troutville Rest Area located on southbound I-81 near mile marker 158.

The rest area was closed in May 2022 to allow crews to extend the ramps leading to the facility.

The off ramp into the rest area was extended approximately 500 feet and the ramp onto southbound I-81 was extended approximately 2,100 feet, VDOT says.

In addition to the ramp work, VDOT also added 12 truck parking spaces to the rest area.

The rest area upgrades cost $4.9 million.

The Troutville Rest Area upgrades are part of a larger I-81 Corridor Improvement Program  designed to improve safety, increase reliability and foster economic growth along the 325-mile I-81 corridor.
