Virginia trooper dragged 3 miles by SUV doing 115 before it slammed into two semis

Virginia State Police (VSP) arrested a motorist from Delaware on multiple charges after fleeing from a traffic stop and dragging a trooper for miles along I-295 at a high rate of speed.

Milton Jermaine Lewis, 38, of Delaware has been charged with reckless driving by speeding, felony eluding of a police officer, having a concealed weapon, altering a serial number on a firearm, felony assault of a law enforcement officer, abduction, attempted capital murder, failure to maintain control of a vehicle, no seatbelt, felony hit and run, according to a news release from VSP.

The incident leading to the arrest began shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, December 2, in Henrico County.

A VSP trooper noticed a 2021 Mazda CX-30 SUV speeding while traveling south on I-295.The trooper observed the SUV traveling at speeds of 97 m.p.h. in a 70 m.p.h. zone and initiated a traffic stop along the shoulder of the interstate at mile marker 37.

When the trooper approached the vehicle from the passenger side, the driver, later identified as Lewis, was non-compliant with requests and sped off from the traffic stop at a high rate of speed, causing the trooper to become stuck in the passenger side door of the SUV.

“Caught in the door, the trooper was dragged approximately 3 miles as the SUV reached speeds of up to 115 m.p.h. as it continued south on I-295. The SUV struck two southbound tractor-trailers and then crashed near the Creighton Rd. exit,” VSP said.

Lewis fled on foot but was apprehended around 6:20 p.m. with help from Henrico County Police.

Investigators found a handgun in the SUV.

The trooper suffered only minor, non-life-threatening injuries. Lewis also suffered  minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
