Wheelchair slips off curb, causing fatal accident with semi truck

Police are searching for the truck driver entangled in a tragic accident involving a man in a motorized wheelchair in Oregon over the weekend.

The accident happened in northeast Portland on Friday, March 18th at around 8:50 p.m.

According to KATU 2 ABC, 59-year-old Raymond McWilliams was riding in his motorized wheelchair near the intersection of Northeast Vancouver Way and Gertz Road when a wheel of the chair slipped off of the curb, causing McWilliams to fall into the roadway. An oncoming semi truck then struck the man, killing him on site. The tractor trailer then kept driving without stopping at the scene.

Police are now asking anyone who might have been in the area at the time of the incident to contact them with any relevant information. Investigators say that the truck driver may not have realized what had happened, and may not have intentionally fled the scene.

“The driver of the tractor-trailer did not remain at the scene. It is unknown if the driver was aware of what happened,” police said in a statement.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact crimetips@portlandoregon.gov, Traffic Investigations Unit, and reference case number 22-73292, or call (503)823-2103.
