Brake failure blamed for big rig crash that closed I-70 at Eisenhower Tunnel

Colorado authorities closed a portion of westbound I-70 on Monday morning for a two semi truck collision.

The crash occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday, January 9, on westbound I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel.

According to Summit Fire & EMS, “a semi-tractor/trailer lost its brakes coming down toward Silverthorne … and collided with a second truck, which overturned.”

The truck that overturned was hauling a load of pipe.

The driver of the truck that overturned suffered minor injuries.

The Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Materials Unit has been called in to clean up spilled fuel.

There is currently no estimate for when westbound I-70 will reopen.
