Child killed when semi hauling U.S. Mail rear-ends car stopped in active lane of traffic

Indiana State Police (ISP) are investigating a fatal two vehicle crash that occurred in Gary, Indiana, on Wednesday.

The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on March 8 on I-80/94 eastbound at mile marker 7.5.

According to ISP, a silver 2016 Nissan Altima was stopped in the right lane of the interstate.

A 2014 Volvo semi pulling a trailer loaded with U.S. Mail was traveling in the right lane and rear-ended the Nissan, causing “catastrophic damage.”

ISP says that two adults and three children were inside the Nissan when the crash occurred and that none of the children were properly restrained.

All occupants of the Nissan suffered major life-threatening injuries.

A six year old girl died while being transported to a nearby hospital.

The semi truck driver, Orlando Shaw, 49, from Illinois, was not injured.

ISP says that the investigation is in the early stages and more information may be released.
