Driver in stolen semi purposely smashes into patrol car while fleeing rest stop hiding place

Published:

A truck driver in a stolen rig intentionally rammed a patrol car while fleeing a rest stop after being discovered by police on Sunday night.

Officers responded to the Warren, Indiana Travel Plaza at Interstate 69 and State Road 5 on the evening of February 5th.

According to The Huntington County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy McVoy arrived at the travel plaza after receiving reports that a tractor trailer had been stolen from Chesterton. After arriving at the travel plaza, McVoy located the stolen truck parked at the location and attempted to make contact with the driver, but the driver immediately started to drive away. The officer then ran back to his patrol vehicle and climbed inside, and that’s when the truck driver purposely crashed into the patrol car with the trailer he was pulling.

The collision disabled the patrol vehicle, so two other officers responded to the scene and eventually pursued the semi truck. The truck driver led officers on a chase for five miles before driving into a field and exiting the rig. The driver then attempted to flee on foot but was eventually taken into custody and taken to the Huntington County Jail.

The suspect is a 34-year-old from Crown Point, Indiana. Their identity has not been released. No information on official charges has been released.
