Five people dead after car fails to yield to semi truck at intersection

Five people were killed during a collision with a tractor trailer in California over the weekend. 

The accident happened on Saturday, January 14th on 81st Avenue eastbound in Thermal, California. 

According to KCAL News, a Volkswager Jetta was heading east on 81st Avenue heading towards the intersection with State Route 86 when the car entered the intersection without yielding to oncoming traffic. 

At the same moment, a semi truck heading south on SR-86 entered the intersection and struck the side of the Volkswagen. The 26-year-old female driver, a 23-year-old man, a 24-year-old woman, and two children ages six and seven were in the car at the time of the wreck. All five were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The truck driver was not hurt in the crash. Police are still investigating the incident, but have determined that the trucker was not believed to be under the influence.
