Five semis involved in fiery crash in I-70 construction zone

Illinois State Police (ISP) are investigating a multiple semi truck crash that occurred near Teutopolis on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. on July 12 on eastbound I-70 at mile marker 101.5. between Effingham and Montrose for a reported multi-vehicle crash in an ongoing construction zone.

Illinois State Police report that a semi truck crossed through a concrete barrier into the opposite lane of travel during the crash.

The crash ultimately involved 5 semi trucks, according to the Teutopolis Fire Protection District.

One person was airlifted to the hospital.

The interstate was closed through the afternoon and into the evening, with all lanes finally reopening shortly before midnight.

The crash remains under investigation.
