I-96 west in Michigan closed for ‘serious’ collision involving multiple semis

Michigan State Police (MSP) are responding to a major multi-vehicle crash that has forced the closure of westbound I-96 near Lowell.

MSP reported the crash shortly before noon on August 9 on westbound I-96 near Nash Highway.

Troopers provided a description of the events leading to the crash:

“Initial report is that a semi failed to slow for a traffic backup and struck the rear of a passenger vehicle, which caused it to go into the median. The semi driver then struck a second semi causing it to go into a third semi. The initial semi driver was ejected from the vehicle and was flown to the hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation and the highway remains closed.”

This is a developing story.
