Indiana DOT to close I-70 welcome center, two I-65 rest stops, for two years

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced some major facility closures that will start next month as part of a larger project to add 1100 new semi truck parking spaces to facilities statewide

Starting June 1, INDOT will close the Clear Creek Welcome Center on I-70 and both northbound and southbound Lebanon Rest Areas on I-65.

All facilities are closed for construction projects that are expected to take two years to complete.

Planned improvements for each facility are listed below.

Clear Creek Welcome Center (I-70 EB, Mile Marker 2 in Vigo County)

  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway theme – visitors can interact with exhibits featuring the IMS, local and regional racing history
  • Children’s play area
  • Adult recreation area and walking path
  • Dog Park
  • There will be a total of 150 semitruck parking spaces.
  • 150 truck parking spaces
  • Trucker restroom facilities
  • Improved vending options and tourism-related information

Lebanon Rest Areas (I-65 NB, Mile Marker 148 / I-65 SB, Mile Marker 149 in Boone County

  • New facilities for semitruck parking only
  • 75 semitruck parking spaces at each facility
  • Trucker restroom facilities

The rest area and welcome center upgrades are part of an INDOT plan to spend over $600 million in improvements to 21 rest areas and welcome centers by the end of fiscal year 2030.

Officials say that when these upgrades are completed, they are expected to add more than 1100 additional semi truck parking spaces to INDOT facilities statewide.
