Kia rear-ended fuel tanker, triggering crash and explosion that killed truck driver, Florida troopers say

A truck driver lost his life over the weekend in a two vehicle collision in Hillsborough County, Florida.

The crash occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, on US-41 near Bloomingdale Avenue.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the driver of a a 2020 Kia Stinger rear-ended a gas tanker truck, causing the truck to explode and then strike a utility pole.

The Kia went off the roadway and came to a stop in a grassy area resting on its roof.

The truck driver, a 49 year old from Alabama, did not survive the crash.

The Kia driver, a 23 year old Florida resident, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

A motorist captured video of the fiery aftermath of the crash.

FHP is asking the drivers of the Dodge Chargers in the video below to contact them as witnesses at 813-558-1800.
