The Weld County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) announced on Friday afternoon that an arrest has finally been made in the death of a truck driver killed in Colorado in 2017.
Seventy-one year old Mark Dean Switzer was arrested on a First Degree Murder charge in the death of 49 year old truck driver Nathan Combs on March 9, 2023, at his home in Carpenter, Wyoming.
Combs, also a Wyoming resident, died on May 18, 2017, near Hereford, Colorado.
WCSO responded to the intersection of WCR 136 and WCR 77 for what was initially thought to be a fatal traffic accident.
“The preliminary information suggested that the driver of an 18-wheeler semi-truck was performing maintenance on the vehicle when the vehicle unexpectedly moved, and the driver was run over by the vehicle; the driver was declared deceased at the scene,” WCSO said.
However, further investigation revealed that Combs had instead died from gunshot wounds that were not self-inflicted.
“Weld County detectives worked diligently to solve this case, conducting interviews and general investigation which led to a suspect, Mark Dean Switzer,” WCSO stated.
With assistance from the Laramie County (Wyoming) Sheriff’s Office, a warrant was executed on Switzer’s home. Firearms and ammunition were collected from the home for testing and and analysis by the Northern Forensic Regional Laboratory, the FBI, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
This analysis and the general investigation led to the arrest and charging of Switzer.
Police did not provide any information on the motive for the fatal shooting.
Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is asked to call the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at (970) 356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
