Man injured after wheelchair rolls straight into back wheels of semi truck

A man in a wheelchair was seriously hurt in Connecticut on Tuesday morning after rolling into the back wheels of a moving tractor trailer.

The accident happened on August 1st in Windham, Connecticut on West Main Street in the area of Cantor Drive and Route 6 at around 11:30 a.m.

Fire crews were heading back to the station after a training session when they saw an elderly man laying in the middle of the intersection.

“As they stopped to render aid, the driver of a nearby tractor trailer truck approached them and stated that the wheelchair operator ran into the rear wheels of his truck,” Willimantic Fire Chief Marc Scrivener said to the Trumbull Times.

“A mutual aid ambulance from Mansfield and Windham Hospital Paramedics were requested, and Lifestar was dispatched to Windham Hospital’s landing pad. The patient’s injuries are life threatening.”

West Main Street is expected to remain closed from the Route 66 intersection to the Route 6 on and off ramps for several hours. The Windham Accident Reconstruction Unit and its Drone Team are investigating the incident.
