The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is asking drivers to plan ahead for a rest area closure that will begin next week.
Starting on Monday, April 10, the I-26 West rest area located at mile marker 41 near the Henderson/Buncombe County line will shutter for the safety of driver and workers.
The location provides parking spaces for 90 passenger cars and 30 semi trucks.
The rest area closure will allow crews to build new entrance and exit ramps for the facility.
The rest area is expected to remain closed through the middle of May 2023.
The eastbound rest area will remain open. When this location opened last summer, NCDOT officials called it “the Taj Mahal of rest areas.”
NCDOT says that drivers can access “a variety of commercial services .. less than one mile on Airport Road.”
NCDOT opened the I-26 West rest area in June 2022 after demolishing the old structure.
