Over the weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in California seized a massive amount of illegal drugs from a commercial shipment of produce.
The drug seizure took place on May 27 at the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility located in Otay Mesa, California.
Shortly after 12 p.m., CBP officer encountered a 34 year old male driving a tractor trailer hauling a load manifested as kale.
The truck was referred for a secondary inspection using a non-intrusive imaging system, which uncovered irregularities in the truck’s load.
A CBP officer discovered packages hidden in the load of kale.
CBP ultimately seized 5,788.41 pounds worth of methamphetamine.
The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $38,070,910.
The truck driver was taken into police custody on suspicion of drug smuggling and later handed over to of Homeland Security Investigations.
In addition to seizing the drugs, CBP seized the truck and trailer.
