One dead after big rig plows into toll booth, CHP says

Published:

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that a truck driver was killed after hitting a toll booth near Richmond on Monday night.

The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on October 9 on I-580 between Marin and Contra Costa at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

CHP says that a semi truck struck the westbound toll booth.

Both the truck and the toll booth went up in flames following the crash.

The truck driver was transported to a hospital following the crash but he later succumbed to his injuries.

NBC Bay Area reports that witnesses saw the truck weaving before it hit the toll booth.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

As of the Tuesday morning rush hour, Caltrans says that lanes 1, 2, and 3 out of 7 are back open on I-580 westbound at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Officials are asking drivers to consider taking State Route 37 and I-80 instead of I-580 as cleanup and investigation continue into Tuesday.
