One dead in nine-vehicle crash involving dump truck that smashed into line of cars

A teenager is dead after a dump truck slammed into a line of stopped cars at an intersection in Kansas on Wednesday morning.

The accident happened on July 26th in Overland Park, Kansas on Metcalf Avenue south of College Boulevard at around 6:45 a.m.

The dump truck slammed into the back of a car driven by a 17-year-old stopped at the intersection of 115th and Metcalf. The force of the impact pushed the dump truck and first car into a line of seven other vehicles. The teenage motorist was seriously hurt in the crash and later died of their injuries.

“[The motorist at the front of the line] said there was a red light, and he said he heard different pops, and then all of a sudden, he was struck from the back,” Overland Park Police spokesman John Lacy said to Fox 4 KC.

No other serious injuries were reported. It is unclear why the dump truck ran into the line of stopped traffic. The dump truck driver had not been arrested as of Wednesday evening. The wreck is still under investigation, and police are asking anyone who saw the incident to contact them.

“It’s still under investigation. We’re also asking the public, if they saw the accident or they know anything, to contact the Overland Park Police Department,” Lacy said.
