Oregon DOT asks drivers to use ‘extra caution’ as active slide threatens I-84

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is monitoring an active landslide and asking drivers to use caution when traveling near it on I-84.

ODOT say that the slide is located adjacent to the eastbound lanes of I-84 near milepost 359.3, about 17 miles northwest of Ontario.

The slide is currently 200-yards-long, 100-yards-wide by 30-foot-deep and is moving at speeds of an inch a day, though ODOT notes that “this could change at any time.”

ODOT says that if the pace of the slide increases, it could cover the eastbound lanes and possibly westbound I-84.

Crews have been performing emergency repair work and monitoring the slide.

Officials believe that the slide occurred sometime during the winter and that it was discovered in early February after a covering blanket of snow melted off.

Drivers are encouraged to view TripCheck.com for road closure information and to expect delays when traveling through the area.
