PennDOT to close I-80 and I-90 rest areas until January 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the closure of two rest areas in the northwestern region for renovations.

On September 1, 2023, PennDOT will close the Pennsylvania Welcome Center on eastbound I-80 in Mercer County to begin upgrades to the facility. The restrooms, parking lot, and outdoor rest area will remain open until September 25, 2023. The facility will remain closed through January 2025 as crews upgrade the restrooms, roof, and more.

Additionally, PennDOT will close the rest stop on eastbound I-90 near the Ohio border on October 10, 2023, for upgrades to the sewage treatment plant, restrooms, and more. The rest area will also reopen in January 2025.

PennDOT recommends that drivers use the rest areas on I-80 eastbound in Venango County, and I-79 northbound and southbound in Mercer and Crawford counties during these closures.
