Police release body cam video from bizarre Indiana Toll Road semi truck crash scene

Published:

New police body cam video brings viewers a close up view of a major crash that left a truck wedged vertically between Indiana Toll Road bridges last month.

The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on December 2, 2022, in Hammond, Indiana.

A UPS truck crashed off the Indiana Toll Road, winding up catching fire while wedged between the eastbound and westbound sides with the cab partially submerged in the river below.

Police say that the crash occurred after the truck struck a center median.

The truck driver, who has been identified as 32 year old Marc Rupert of Illinois, survived with minor injuries. He was able to escape from the cab and swam to a nearby concrete pillar, where he stayed until he was rescued.

In the body cam video, the responding officer assesses the scene as firefighters battle the fire on the truck. The police officer searches the water for signs of the driver.

“Yeah I don’t know where to start with this report,” a police officer says in the video.

“I don’t know how the hell this would have happened,” another says.
