This week, a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputy was killed on his second day on the job after he reportedly failed to yield to a tractor trailer.
The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. on August 29 at the intersection of State Highway 103 and State Highway 147 in Texas.
Authorities say that a 2014 Peterbilt truck was westbound on SH 103.
At the same time, SCSO Deputy Matthew Pierson was in a marked patrol car traveling north on SH 147 when he “failed to yield to the truck tractor, striking the trailer portion of it.”
Pierson did not survive the collision.
Truck driver William Lyons, 54, was not hurt.
According to the Etoile Volunteer Fire Department, Pierson was killed on his “second day of work” for the SCSO.
The investigation is ongoing.
Pierson previously worked as a Public Information Officer and firefighter with the Etoile Volunteer Fire Department.
