MSP reported multiple crashes on eastbound I-96 between mile marker 73 (Grand River) and mile marker 76 in Portland Township.
MSP’s Sixth District announced on Sunday that a total of 150 vehicles were involved. Of those, 84 were damaged, and 66 were non-damaged slide offs only.
Troopers said that 16 people were transported to the hospital, but no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Both eastbound and westbound I-96 were closed for about 5 hours.
While the pileup remains under investigation, MSP said that a lake effect snow squall caused whiteout conditions at the time that the crashes occurred.
