Texas DPS says unsafe speed led to fiery tanker crash that killed truck driver

Officials in Texas are investigating a tanker truck crash that claimed the life of a truck driver in Cameron County on Monday evening.

The crash happened in Brownsville as a tanker driver hauling hazardous flammable material was northbound on State Highway 550.

The driver lost control and struck a concrete barrier. The truck rolled over and caught fire, sending up huge plumes of black smoke.

The truck driver died at the scene.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the initial investigation indicates that the driver was traveling at an unsafe speed when the crash occurred.

The crash remains under investigation.
