Three dead in five vehicle crash after southbound semi crossed into northbound Route 33

Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) are investigating a multiple fatality crash involving a tractor trailer that occurred in Monroe County on Wednesday.

The crash was reported around 10:35 a.m. on March 1 in Hamilton Township, Pennsylvania.

According to PSP Troop N Public Information Officer Anthony Petroski, a tractor trailer was southbound on Route 33 near the Saylorsburg Exit when the truck traveled off the west berm and struck an embankment. The truck then reentered southbound Route 33 and veered southeast, striking a guardrail in the center median and then entering northbound lanes of traffic on Route 33.

The truck then struck a second semi and three other passenger vehicles.

Two of the three passenger vehicles came to a stop underneath the semi truck that crossed the median. Both drivers were pronounced dead at a hospital. A passenger in one of the vehicles that was underneath the semi truck died at the scene.

PSP did not provide information on injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by PSP.

“An updated news release will be disseminated at a later date, dependent on the investigation, which is still active, and may take some time. Troop N would like to thank all motorists for their patience and understanding who sustained major traffic delays due to the extent of this investigation,” Petroski said.
