Tire blowout reported as cause for trucker’s fatal crash off CBBT

Police have determined the cause of a semi truck driver’s fatal crash off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) in Virginia Beach, Virginia, last month, according to a report.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on June 22, 2023.

Thirty-six year old truck driver Chris Scott was northbound on the CBBT near mile marker 1 when he crashed off the bridge and into the bay below.

After an extensive search involving the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies, Scott’s body was found still inside the cab of the submerged truck on June 23.

According to a police report obtained by WAVY, one of the driver’s side tires on Scott’s truck struck a curb near the one mile marker. Following the tire blowout, “the front driver’s side tire went up onto the curb and the truck crashed through the guard rail, landing in the Chesapeake Bay.”

The report also indicated that Scott was driving at the posted speed limit of 55 m.p.h.
