Transportation officials in Arizona have closed a portion of I-10 following a fatal early morning collision near Willcox.
The crash occurred before 2 a.m. on May 3 on I-10 westbound at mile marker 331 near Willcox.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reports that a semi truck left the interstate and struck a bridge pillar for the US 191 overpass to the right of roadway.
The truck became engulfed in flames following the crash.
The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Images shared by CCSO and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) show major structural damage to the bridge.
I-10 closed until further notice as officials investigate the cause of the crash and inspect the bridge structure. ADOT says that eastbound traffic is now exiting and re-entering I-10 at the US 191 junction. Westbound I-10 remains closed. ADOT recommends drivers take SR 80 through Douglas and Bisbee and re-enter I-10 at Benson.
US 191 is also closed at the I-10 Junction.
