Truck driver stuck in Smugglers Notch told troopers he could not read signs in English

Published:

This week, a semi truck driver was issued multiple citations after becoming stuck on the Smugglers Notch segment of Vermont Route 108 in Cambridge, Vermont.

Th incident began around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1 when Vermont State Police (VSP) were notified of a tractor trailer in Smugglers Notch.

When troopers arrived on scene, they found the truck in Smugglers Notch partially off the roadway.

VSP identified the truck driver as 49 year old Colorado resident Ramiro Suarez Cadena.

“Cadena told Troopers that he was unable to read or understand the English language, so he did not heed the multiple signs prior to entering the Notch,” VSP said.

VSP said that Cadena was issued several citations for entering Smugglers Notch and blocking traffic.

At least two other semi truck drivers were caught using Smugglers Notch in July.

Each year, several semi trucks become stuck in the Notch after it opens for the season in the spring in spite of signs warning that trucks are not allowed.
