Truck hauling lithium batteries explodes at Alabama truck stop

Firefighters are on the scene of an explosion that occurred at a truck stop in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday.

The incident occurred on March 31 at the Flying J on Daniel Payne Drive near I-65.

Authorities say that the explosion happened near the rear of a truck that was hauling lithium batteries stored in 55 gallon containers.

WBRC reports that the truck driver was not inside the vehicle when the explosion occurred.

No injuries have been reported.

Birmingham firefighters say that the incident has been contained as of 2 p.m., but multiple agencies remain at the scene for clean up and investigation.
