Truck passenger seriously injured after rig misses runaway ramp due to traffic

A person in a semi truck was seriously injured after the rig they were riding in lost its brakes in Utah late last week.

The incident happened on Friday, June 2nd just after 5 p.m. in Garden City, Utah.

The driver told investigators that his brakes failed on the descent from Logan Canyon into Garden City on the shore of Bear Lake. He says he was unable to use a runaway truck ramp because of the rig’s speed and traffic in the area. The semi truck then plowed through a red light while heading eastbound through the intersection of SR-30 and SR 89.

After driving through the intersection, the semi truck crashed through a parking lot, a fence, and some storage sheds before crashing into the corner of a condo and a 1,000 propane tank, reported ABC 4.

The truck driver sustained non life threatening injuries in the wreck, but the passenger in the truck suffered serious injuries and was flown to a nearby hospital.

People living near the crash site were evacuated due to a propane leak caused by the crash. Investigators say that the runaway truck ramp is several miles before the intersection.
