Trucker dead after SUV tire smashes through windshield

Published:

A truck driver is dead after an accident caused by a wayward SUV tire.

The accident happened on Monday, September 11th at 3:40 p.m. in Vestavia Hills, Alabama on Interstate 459.

According to WVTM 13, 42-year-old trucker Jeffrey E. Cane was driving his 2023 Freightliner north on I-459 near the Liberty Parkway access ramp when an SUV tire crashed through the windshield. The tire caused the trucker to lose control of the rig and go swerving off the interstate and into the trees. The semi truck then caught fire.

Cane was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation revealed that the tire had come loose from a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by 21-year-old Anthony Hayes. Officials shut down I-459 for hours as they investigated the incident and cleared the wreckage.
