Trucker slapped with 24 charges following 3 traffic stops in 24 hours

Canadian police issued two dozen citations to a truck driver who was pulled over multiple times within a twenty-four hour period.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), three traffic stops involving a 45 year old truck driver from Brampton all occurred between 10 a.m. on January 28 and 8 a.m. on January 29 along the Highway 11 corridor.

The first traffic stop occurred around 10:45 a.m. on January 28 following complaints of a semi truck swerving on the road. OPP caught up with the truck on Highway 11 near Ramore and issued the driver four citations.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on January 29, OPP conducted a traffic stop on the same truck and driver on Highway 11 near Val Cote and issued another four citations.

Around 7:40 a.m. on January 29, the truck driver was pulled over for a third time on Highway 11 near Smooth Rock Falls following a complaint from another driver.

In total, the truck driver was issued the following citations:

  •  Careless driving (three counts)
  •  Driver failing to surrender licence (three counts)
  •  Failing to surrender inspection schedule (two counts)
  •  Failing to enter defect in daily inspection report (two counts)
  •  Improperly driving a commercial motor vehicle with a minor defect in it
  •  Unnecessary slow driving (two counts)
  •  Failing to maintain daily log (two counts)
  •  Failing to take 10 hours off in a day
  •  Exceeding 13 hours driving time without eight hours off
  •  Driving after 14 hours on duty without eight hours off
  •  Driving after 16 hours since last break without eight hours off
  •  Failing to surrender daily log
  •  Driver in possession of more that one daily log
  •  Failing to keep record of duty status
  •  Failing to manually input information into ELD
  •  Entering inaccurate information in record 

The truck was towed and impounded in Cochrane.

Following further investigation, OPP issued multiple charges to the trucking company owner in Edmonton, Alberta, including:

  • Fail to surrender the inspection schedule
  • Two counts of failure to enter defects in the daily inspection report
  • Improperly driving a commercial motor vehicle with a minor defect in it or in a drawn vehicle
  • Request, require, or allow driver not to comply with section 18

“The OPP encourages drivers to operate within their allotted hours,” police said. “Driving while fatigued affects your judgment, perception, and reaction time.”
