Two killed in South Dakota after car driver fleeing police hits big rig

A police pursuit ended in a double fatality collision in Yankton, South Dakota, on Wednesday.

According to Yankton County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO), a police pursuit began around 10 a.m. on May 10 as the South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) attempted to stop a red Chevrolet traveling east on Highway 50 for speeding at 100 m.p.h. and erratic driving.

The driver of the Chevrolet refused to pull over and pursuit began, continuing east on Highway 50.

Near the city limits of Yankton, the Chevrolet collided with a semi truck at a high rate of speed.


Two people in the Chevrolet were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person in the car was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Yankton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
