Published:

A truck driver was arrested last week nearly 8 months after a collision with a moped that eventually turned fatal.

The accident with the moped happened on June 16th, 2022 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at 7:20 a.m. at the intersection of 27th Street and Patterson Avenue.

The moped driver and semi truck collided, seriously injuring the rider. The truck driver then fled the scene.

WXII 12 reports that the 41-year-old moped rider, Michael Werts, was hospitalized for six months following the accident before eventually succumbing to his injuries on December 25th.

After investigation, police were able to identify the truck driver as 26-year-old Pearless Lee Speller III, and determined that he ran a red light at the time of the collision.

Speller was served a warrant for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to stop at a steady red light on February 9th. He has since been released on $2,000 bond and has a set court date for April 12th.
