Woman facing charges for cell-phone related crash that killed trucker

A woman is facing charges for an accident that left a truck driver dead in New Jersey late last year.

The incident happened on the afternoon of November 2022 in Monroe Township, New Jersey.

According to Patch NJ, 30-year-old Lashaya Goldsmith was driving west on Malaga Road near Morgan Road when she drifted into the eastbound lane and struck a semi truck. The semi truck then skidded into another lane and hit another car, went off the road, and onto the lawn of a home in the 900 block of East Malaga Road, where it hit a tree.

62-year-old trucker Richard Lupton was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. as a result of the injuries he suffered in the wreck. Goldsmith was airlifted to a hospital for a serious lower body injury. The person in the third car was not seriously hurt.

An investigation into the incident revealed that Goldsmith was using a cell-phone at the moment she drifted into the path of the semi truck, Patch reported. Goldsmith is now facing death by auto and assault by auto charges.
