Wyoming Highway Patrol cites truck driver for near head-on crash caught on trooper’s dash cam

Published:

The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) shared dash cam video from a trooper’s close call with a semi truck on I-80 earlier in April as a reminder to move over for emergency vehicles.

The incident occurred April 5, 2023, as WHP provided traffic control for Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) crews working on I-80 at mile marker 57 east of Church Butte in Uinta County.

Troopers positioned their cruisers facing east with lights activated to try to move traffic from the right to the left lane to protect the WYDOT crew.

“Just before 6 PM, the first Trooper noticed a commercial motor vehicle ( CMV) approaching his position. As the CMV got closer, the Trooper noticed it was not moving over or slowing down. The Trooper quickly backed out of the way while simultaneously swinging the patrol vehicle off the roadway. Thankfully, at the last moment, the semi swerved to the left, missing the Trooper’s vehicle by inches,” WHP said.

WHP said that a second trooper parked behind the first was able to perform a traffic stop on the semi truck. The truck driver was issued citations for cited for careless driving and violating Wyoming’s move-over law.

“The WHP would like to remind all motorists it is the law to move over for emergency vehicles on the side of the road,” state police said.
