$700K worth of drugs uncovered during routine roadside CMV inspection

Illinois State Police arrested a truck driver on drug trafficking charges after finding a large amount of suspected cocaine/fentanyl during a routine roadside CMV inspection.

Forty-five year old Houston-based truck driver Juan Carlos Oliva Lopez was arrested on Monday, February 19, 2024, according to Illinois State Police.

At 3:01 p.m. on February 19, an Illinois trooper pulled over a Freightliner semi truck on northbound I-57 south of Ashkum for a federal motor carrier safety compliance inspection traffic stop.

During the traffic stop, the trooper noted “numerous indicators of criminal activity.”

A subsequent search of the Freightliner uncovered approximately 49 pounds of suspected cocaine/fentanyl.

The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $700,000.

Lopez was arrested and booked into the Iroquois County Jail. He is facing a Controlled Substance Trafficking charge.
