A truck driver was arrested on Monday for opening fire on another semi truck on a New York interstate.
The shooting occurred on Monday, July 29, near Cheektowaga, New York, according to New York State Police (NYSP).
NYSP responded at 7:43 a.m. to a report of shots fired at a semi truck traveling on I-90 westbound near Exit 50.
Responding troopers “were notified of a second incident of a hit-and-run side swipe collision of a passenger car involving a tractor trailer suspected in the shooting on the I-90.”
NYSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit located and pulled over the suspect tractor trailer.
The operator of the suspect tractor trailer was identified as 26 year old Ohio resident Dylan J. Cottingham.
After obtaining a warrant, police searched Cottingham’s truck and found a semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun and multiple magazines.
The shooting victim tractor trailer pulled off I-90 near Exit 50 after the shooting.
“Investigation determined that the victim vehicle contained a female operator, a female passenger and a 10-year female child who was asleep in the sleeper cab of the truck. NYSP Forensic Identification Unit processed the vehicle and located multiple bullet holes including one near the sleeper berth within a very close proximity of the sleeping child,” NYSP said.
Cottingham was charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree, Reckless Endangerment 1st degree, Criminal Mischief 3rd degree and Menacing 2nd degree.
Troopers say Cottingham does possess a pistol permit out of Ohio.
Cottingham was lodged into the Erie County Holding Center without bail.
