Deputy in fatal head-on crash with semi crossed center line, North Carolina troopers say

North Carolina troopers say that a Harnett County deputy crossed the center line, leading to a multi-vehicle crash that claimed his life on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, near Lillington, North Carolina.

Harnett County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Johnson, 51, was driving in his cruiser on Darrock Road near Highway 201 when he crossed the center line and struck a flatbed truck head-on, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The out-of-control police cruiser then struck a Dodge Durango traveling behind the truck.

Deputy Johnson died at the scene.

Two people in the Durango suffered minor injuries.

The truck driver was not injured.

News outlet ABC 11 said that skid marks on the road at the crash site indicate that the truck driver attempted to stop or evade the crash.

According to WITN, no charges have been filed.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
