Deputy struck by jackknifing semi truck on Ohio interstate

A Delaware County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Deputy suffered major injuries on Thursday when he was struck by an out-of-control semi truck while responding to a previous crash.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on December 5 in Berkshire Township, Ohio.

Two DCSO officers were on scene on southbound I-71 to assist after a 2009 Toyota Camry crashed. Two DCSO cruisers were parked on the right-hand berm with lights activated, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

A woman operating a 2017 Freightliner Cascadia south on I-71 lost control, and her jackknifing truck struck Deputy Golden and the Camry.

Deputy Golden and the Camry driver were both hospitalized with serious injuries.

The truck driver was not hurt.

“Every day, our deputies face countless dangers – it is part of the job. Thursday, Deputy Golden was struck by a truck while taking a crash report on the side of the highway. He was seriously injured and remains hospitalized. Today, he is in good spirits and starting to feel better, but he has a long road to recovery with more procedures to come,” the DCSO said on Friday.
