DOT cams capture hot air balloon hitting power line, crashing near Minnesota highway

Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) traffic cameras captured a hot air balloon crash that occurred in Rochester on Wednesday.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. at Highway 63 between 40th Street SE and 48th Street SE, according to the City of Rochester, MN Police Department.

Police say that the balloon operator was attempting to land in a nearby field when a gust of wind sent the balloon into a power line.

The balloon basket containing three people disconnected from the balloon and tumbled twenty to thirty feet to the ground.

Two of the balloon occupants suffered “very minor injuries.”

The crash sparked a brush fire.

The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
