A truck driver was arrested on Thursday morning after crashing into police cruisers while trying to avoid traffic.
The accident happened on December 12th along Interstate 75 near the 11 Mile Road ramp in Royal Oak, Michigan.
According to Fox2Detriot, Michigan State Police were investigating another crash, resulting in slowed traffic. A tractor trailer attempted to pass the traffic by traveling in the left lane. MSP vehicles were parked in the left lane investigating the initial accident when the semi truck was unable to stop in time, causing a crash between the commercial vehicle and the police cruisers.
The semi truck then crashed into one patrol car, which was pushed 100 yards into a second patrol car. The semi truck then nearly slid into two more officers before crashing into another car involved in the initial crash. The two troopers were able to avoid being struck by the semi truck by jumping over a median wall.
One trooper was hospitalized as a result of the accident. His injuries were described as minor. The truck driver was arrested and charged with reckless driving.
“This incident had everything we have been talking about this last month.” said the second district’s first lieutenant Mike Shaw. “…responding troopers had to remove pedestrians from the freeway ramps who were trying to take photos for their favorite social media platform. We are continuing to ask drivers to slow down, move over, drive safe and please do not walk on the freeway.”
