Driver rescued from deep water outside Anchorage

A truck driver is okay after veering off of a highway and into some deep water late on Tuesday evening.

The accident happened at about 11:10 p.m. on September 3rd in the Turnagain Arm near Portage, Alaska.

According to Anchorage Daily News, the tractor trailer was traveling along the Seward Highway near mile marker 82 when the “driver lost control and veered off road into the Inlet” where a piece of guardrail had been removed for construction.

The semi truck ended up almost completely submerged and the trucker sustained non life threatening injuries. There was reportedly horizontal rain and poor visibility at the time of the wreck.

“He did an amazing job keeping the wheels up — keeping the wheels on the ground,” said Girdwood Fire and Rescue Chief Michelle Weston. “It could have gone a totally different way.”

No citations were issued as a result of the incident. A tow truck was working to remove the truck and trailer from the water as of Wednesday afternoon. No further information has been released.
