Illinois State Police (ISP) confirmed that five people were killed on Monday in a crash involving a school bus and a commercial vehicle in western Illinois.
The crash occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, in Rushville, Illinois.
According to ISP, a school bus traveling east on Route 24 crossed over into the westbound lanes and struck a westbound truck hauling sand.
Both vehicles caught fire following the crash.
Troopers say that the bus driver, three students on the bus, and the semi truck driver all died as a result of the collision.
ISP says that it is unclear why the bus driver crossed over into westbound traffic.
The incident is under investigation.
